I put this list together after going back through the Bible looking for every passage that deals honestly with fear and worry — not just the famous ones. Some of these verses I’ve had memorized for years. Others surprised me when I found them. What struck me most is that the Bible doesn’t pretend anxiety doesn’t exist. It names it, takes it seriously, and points somewhere specific.

The Most Comforting Verses for Anxiety

Philippians 4:6–7 (BSB)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This is perhaps the most cited verse on anxiety. Paul wrote it from prison — yet he could still speak of peace. The key: present your requests to God rather than carrying them alone.

Matthew 6:25–27 (BSB)

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

Jesus directly addresses worry in the Sermon on the Mount. The logic is simple: if God provides for birds, how much more will He provide for His children?

1 Peter 5:7 (BSB)

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Short, simple, and profound. You don’t have to carry your burdens — you can actively transfer them to God.

Isaiah 41:10 (BSB)

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God’s promise to Israel — and to every believer — is presence and strength, not the absence of difficulty.

John 14:27 (BSB)

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Jesus distinguishes between the peace the world offers (temporary, conditional) and the peace He gives (lasting, unconditional).

How to Use These Verses

When anxiety strikes, try:

  1. Read one verse slowly, out loud if possible.
  2. Pause on a phrase that resonates — don’t rush.
  3. Turn it into a short prayer: “Lord, I believe you care for me. Help me cast this on you.”
  4. Return to the verse throughout the day when the anxiety rises again.

Memorizing even one verse (like Philippians 4:6–7 or 1 Peter 5:7) means you always have it available — even when you can’t open a Bible.

A Final Encouragement

Anxiety doesn’t mean your faith is weak. Even Elijah, David, and Paul wrestled with fear and discouragement. What the Bible consistently shows is a path through anxiety — not around it — by bringing it to God.

If you’re struggling with anxiety beyond what Scripture alone can address, please also consider speaking with a pastor, counselor, or mental health professional.
