I keep a short list of verses I come back to when things are hard. Most of them are about strength — not the motivational-poster kind, but the kind that gets you through something you didn’t think you could get through. This is a longer version of that list, with some context on each one.

The Most Powerful Verses on Strength

Philippians 4:13 (BSB)

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Perhaps the most quoted verse about strength in the entire Bible. Paul wrote this while imprisoned — and it’s important to note the context: he’s speaking about being content in all circumstances, whether in plenty or in need. The strength here is the ability to endure, not necessarily to accomplish anything you desire.

Isaiah 40:31 (BSB)

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

A beloved promise: strength is renewed for those who wait on (hope in) God. The imagery — eagles soaring — speaks to something effortless and lifted above circumstances.

Isaiah 41:10 (BSB)

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Three promises in one verse: strengthening, helping, upholding. This is God’s active commitment to sustain you.

Psalm 46:1 (BSB)

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Not just strength — refuge too. When the world feels like it’s shaking (the next verses describe earthquakes and crashing seas), God is stable ground.

2 Corinthians 12:9–10 (BSB)

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

A counterintuitive truth: weakness is where God’s strength shows up most clearly. You don’t have to pretend to be strong to receive strength.

When Strength Feels Impossible

The Bible doesn’t promise you’ll always feel strong. What it promises is that God’s strength is available — and often works through our weakness.

A few honest truths from Scripture:

  • Elijah burned out and asked to die (1 Kings 19:4). God’s response was food, rest, and presence — not a lecture on faith.
  • David cried out repeatedly in the Psalms, expressing despair honestly. He was still “a man after God’s own heart.”
  • Paul begged for a “thorn” to be removed (2 Cor. 12:7–8). The answer was no, but grace was given instead.

Strength in Scripture is rarely heroic self-sufficiency. It’s more often the quiet courage to keep trusting when things are hard.

Practical Steps

When you’re depleted and need strength:

  1. Pray honestly — “I am weak. I need your strength.” Simple and direct.
  2. Speak a verse aloud — Philippians 4:13 or Isaiah 40:31 as a declaration.
  3. Rest without guilt — God fed Elijah before giving him more to do (1 Kings 19:5–8).
  4. Ask for help — Asking others for support isn’t weakness; it’s community.
